ChatGPT Search will do the legwork for you

ChatGPT Search is here to try and combine the best of chatbots and web search. OpenAI’s latest feature searches the web in response to your natural language questions, providing “fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources.” When using ChatGPT, the bot will search the web based on the questions you ask. Or, if you want to manually override its decision-making, you can tap a new web search icon below the input bar.

OpenAI says the feature looks for “original, high-quality content from across the web,” integrating it into conversational answers. This includes trusted news media sources and data providers like AccuWeather. The data will include things like weather, stocks, sports, news, and maps.

Under each ChatGPT Search answer, you’ll see a Sources button. Click on it, and a sidebar with references and links will open. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search uses an improved version of GPT-4o that has been post-trained “using innovative synthetic data generation techniques.”

This included distilling the output from the company’s OpenAI o1-preview. This model is much slower than GPT-4o, so perhaps training on it (rather than using it directly) will help the new feature improve its reasoning skills without having to work too hard on answers.

The company used feedback from its SearchGPT test runs to help improve the feature. “We’ve incorporated the best of SearchGPT into ChatGPT,” the company wrote.

The feature will be available today for ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers. It will be available on the ChatGPT mobile and desktop apps and the web. OpenAI says enterprise and Edu users will get access in the next few weeks, and free users will get the feature in the coming months.

ChatGPT has support for voice conversations from late 2023, but if you’re new to OpenAI’s chatbot, it can be hard to figure out how to interact with it since there are so many ways to do it. In this guide, I’ll explain the main differences between ChatGPT’s two voice modes and how to use them both.

What is ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode

As of the writing of this article, OpenAI offers two different ways to interact with ChatGPT using your voice: “Standard” and “Advanced.” The first is available to all users, with usage counting against one’s message limit. “Advanced,” on the other hand, has more detailed restrictions.

As a free user, OpenAI offers a monthly preview of the tool. Subscribing to the company’s $20 per month Plus plan lets you use Advanced Voice daily. OpenAI notes that daily limits may change, but either way, the company promises to notify users 15 minutes before they reach their usage limit. Pro users can use Advanced Voice as much as they want, provided they do so in a “reasonable” manner and comply with company policies.
